Vell Executive Search looked into the major HR changes in the Fortune 1000 for the twelve months ended April 2016. We use the CHRO term to encompass the top role of HR, as there are a variety of titles.

  • CHROs on Boards: We are seeing an increasing number of HR execs on Fortune 1000 boards, or getting professional director’s training (like with the NACD).
  • CHROs - Open Roles / Successors not Announced: We also examine roles that may still be open, e.g. where there was an announcement of a departure but no apparent successor. CHRO Open Roles
  • CHRO Promotions  & other interesting role extensions:CHRO & HR Function Appointments in the Fortune 1000 - announcement details
    • CHROs getting promoted to beyond the Human Resources/ People functions, such as CAO, Shared Services or even President/ GM, as well as a variety of different  functions.
    • Some other interesting roles paired with HR include:  Environment, health & sustainability; corporate communications (internal & external); investor relations; external affairs; & others.
  • CHRO & HR Function Appointments in the Fortune 1000 - announcement details

But before we go to these appointments, Vell Executive Search looked at  711 corporate heads of HR in Fortune 1000 companies, we find that women make a slight majority of the HR heads.

In terms of revenue size, women’s average revenue size is $15.5 billion while men are around $14 billion. On the median side, women’s average revenue is $5.54 billion while men’s is $5.64 billion.

For the corporate heads of HR whose age in known, 240 men and 278 women, men’s average and median age is about 54 and women’s average and median is about 52. The range of ages is wider for men, from 37 to 79,  while women are from 39 to 65. Herbert Theodore,79, is the VP HR for  Telephone Data Systems, out of Chicago, IL. On the men’s side, there are 7 others in addition over the age of 65, including one 72. The youngest, 37, is also a man David Silverman at Amphenol Corporation (NYSE:APH).

Women have less of a range, but there are four women under 40 (all 39), and  one man under 40 (37). As a percentage, the pipeline skews to the younger end: 33% of the 278 women were aged 40-49 (as opposed to 25% of men) and 52% of women were aged 50-59 vs. 56% of the men.

Comments, advice, corrections are greatly appreciated.

Thanks again and all the best,
